Case Study 2: Sixth Year Student

Andrew is a Sixth Year Student. We are looking at putting a plan in place for his Homework, Study & Revision for weekdays. He has very definite views on the path he wants to take at Third Level. The Course he wants to gain entry to requires in excess of 500 points. He is a member of the Senior Rugby Squad in the School and has to make serious commitments to this.

He has Training Sessions on Mondays & Thursdays after School which finish at 5.30 pm. He has Matches on Wednesday afternoons. Supervised Study is available in his School.

I recommended the following schedule for weekdays :-

  • Mondays – Rugby Training (4 to 5.30 pm), Session 1 (7 to 8 m), Session 2 (8.10 to 9.10 pm) and Session 3 (9.20 to 10 pm). All sessions at Home.

  • Tuesdays – Supervised Study (4 to 6 pm), Session 1 (7 to 7.40 pm), Session 2 (7.50 to 8.30 pm) and Session 3 (8.40 to 9.20 pm).

  • Wednesdays – Rugby Match (2 to 4.30 pm). Session 1 (5 to 6 pm), Session 2 (7 to 7.40 pm), Session 3 (7.50 to 8.30 pm), Session 4 (8.40 to 9.20 pm) and Session 5 (9.30 to 10.10 pm).

  • Thursdays – Rugby Training (4 to 5.30 pm), Session 1 (7 to 8 pm), Session 2 (8.10 to 8.50 pm) and Session 3 (9 to 9.40 pm).

  • Fridays – Supervised Study (4 to 6 pm), Session 1 (7 to 7.40 pm) and Session 2 (7.50 to 8.30 pm).

Ideally, for Sixth Year Students, I am looking for a minimum of 4 Hours on average per day including weekends.
For Andrew, because of his commitment to Rugby, we are short a few hours. He may have to look at making this up at a later stage. He could make up some of it at weekends. I don’t like to see Students working beyond 10 pm as it is usually less productive then. I have suggested to Andrew that, in the event of a match being postponed or a training session being cancelled, he must be ready to fit in some extra school related work then. A priority is making sure that he can at least complete Homework each evening. When the Rugby Season is over, he will be able to include some additional time. However, it will still be very important to include adequate time for Sporting/Physical activity as his body/mind will still need this.
