Case Study 1: Mentoring of a 1st Year Student

Sean is a First Year Student. We are looking at putting a plan in place for the October Mid-Term Break. He is going on a trip with his Soccer Club to the UK over the first Weekend including Monday. Also, he is away all day on Friday with the Scouts.

Read on to discover more about his simple and effective schedule.

I recommended the following schedule for the 9 Days :-

  • Saturday, Sunday & Monday – trip with Soccer Club.

  • Tuesday – Session 1 (9.30 to 10 am), Session 2 (10.10 to 10.40 am) and Session 3 (10.50 to 11.20 am). Rest of the day free for Leisure/Family time.

  • Wednesday – Session 1 (10 to 10.30 am), Session 2 (10.40 to 11.10 am) and Session 3 (11.20 to 11.50 am). A slightly later start to give him a little lie on following exertions of trip away. Again, free for the rest of the day.

  • Thursday – Session 1 (2.30 to 3 pm), Session 2 (3.10 to 3.40 am) and Session 3 (3.50 to 4.20 pm). The sessions are in the afternoon because Sean had arranged to meet a few friends in the morning.

  • Friday – on a camp with the Scouts all day.

  • Saturday & Sunday – Rest/Leisure/Family time.

The emphasis for First Year Students is on just a little school related work during the mid-term break. I recommended four and a half hours broken up into nine 30-minute periods. I usually suggest doing no work over the 2 weekends. If homework hasn’t been prescribed by their Teachers, Students will require guidance from their Parents.

The activities they have planned for the break should appear on the schedule. This will make clear to them that there is only a little time for work and a lot for leisure. This will help them to buy into the overall Plan.
